Required Qualifications: Candidates must have a PhD or ScD in Biostatistics, Statistics, or a closely related field and credentials commensurate with appointment as a tenured full professor in the Division and School. They should have a nationally recognized record of scholarship and contributions to the field, including securing funding; demonstrated excellence in mentorship, leadership, and management; and experience in teaching and/or mentoring in a diverse academic environment.

Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker who is committed to advancing the science of biostatistics and its applications in public health and medicine. We seek a candidate who can articulate a vision for enhancing the research and educational missions of the Division nationally and internationally, and who has the knowledge, skills, and managerial experience needed for guiding our organization.

About the Job

The School of Public Health (SPH) at the University of Minnesota seeks a visionary and strategic leader to serve as Division Head of Biostatistics and oversee a highly ranked program with a dynamic, diverse, and welcoming group of faculty, staff, and students. To be appointed at the rank of Full Professor, the Division Head will be a well-established researcher with knowledge and understanding of methodological and collaborative research, a demonstrated capacity to secure external research funding , dedication to mentoring of faculty and staff with diverse areas of expertise, and will possess the leadership skills to further strengthen and develop our successful research and teaching programs while cultivating new ideas and partnerships within and across disciplines in the School, University, and broader community.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Public Health, the Division Head will:

  • Serve as the chief leader and faculty administrator of the Division.
  • Develop mission plans and strategies for the Division in conjunction with an executive faculty team composed of selected biostatistics faculty.
  • S erve as a member of the SPH Leadership Team composed of the dean, division heads, associate deans and administrative officers. As such, the Division Head plays an important and responsible role in the success of the entire school.
  • Strengthen a collegial and collaborative culture that is inclusive, diverse, and supportive for faculty, staff, and students;
  • Recruit and provide exceptional mentoring to excellent faculty from diverse backgrounds;
  • Work collaboratively with SPH leadership to supervise, prepare, implement and monitor the Division budget, that encompasses all funding sources and ensures compliance with grant, legislative, and institutional guidelines as well as effective management of Division resources;
  • Advance and contribute to the Division's diverse portfolio of interdisciplinary research, teaching, and service;
  • Support, expand, and develop collaborations with community, industry, and government partners;
  • Seek philanthropic opportunities and partnerships with the support of the SPH Advancement and Communication teams.

About the Department

The Division of Biostatistics, one of four in the SPH, is the primary biostatistical academic unit at the University of Minnesota. Our 24 tenured, tenure-track, and contract faculty, 47 staff, and over 80 graduate students are engaged in methodological and collaborative research in genetics and 'omics, causal modeling, medical imaging, data science, survival analysis, meta-analysis, machine learning/data mining, and clinical trial design, among many other areas. The Division operates the Coordinating Centers for Biometric Research (CCBR), a world-class statistical and data coordinating center that has played a key role in running several high-profile, high-impact studies, particularly in the areas HIV, Ebola, and influenza. Division faculty also oversee the Biostatistical Design and Analysis Center (BDAC), a consulting group linked to the University's Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), and the Biostatistics shared resource of the University's Masonic Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Division offers doctoral, masters, and graduate certificate programs, and has a large on-line and in-class service teaching program. The Division's doctoral training program is a particular strength, enrolling approximately 10 new students per year; recent graduates have obtained faculty and post-doctoral positions at a wide variety of prestigious institutions. The Twin Cities metropolitan area is also home to a number of major biomedical research companies, including Medtronic, Boston Scientific, and United Health/Optum, providing an opportunity for create synergistic collaborations and partnerships ( http://www.sph.umn.edu/academics/divisions/biostatistics/ ).
